Summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn comes the first novel in her beloved Regency-set series featuring the charming, powerful Bridgerton family—soon to be a Netflix series。

In the ballrooms and drawing rooms of Regency London, rules abound。 From their earliest days, children of aristocrats learn how to address an earl and curtsey before a prince—while other dictates of the ton are unspoken yet universally understood。 A proper duke should be imperious and aloof。 A young, marriageable lady should be amiable…but not too amiable。

Daphne Bridgerton has always failed at the latter。 The fourth of eight siblings in her close-knit family, she has formed friendships with the most eligible young men in London。 Everyone likes Daphne for her kindness and wit。 But no one truly desires her。 She is simply too deuced honest for that, too unwilling to play the romantic games that captivate gentlemen。

Amiability is not a characteristic shared by Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings。 Recently returned to England from abroad, he intends to shun both marriage and society—just as his callous father shunned Simon throughout his painful childhood。 Yet an encounter with his best friend’s sister offers another option。 If Daphne agrees to a fake courtship, Simon can deter the mamas who parade their daughters before him。 Daphne, meanwhile, will see her prospects and her reputation soar。

The plan works like a charm—at first。 But amid the glittering, gossipy, cut-throat world of London’s elite, there is only one certainty:

Love ignores every rule…

I truly enjoyed this author’s writing style - i don’t know that I’d quite say “the new Jane Austen” as the cover toted, but I can see the similarities and even a few stylistic differences that I preferred。 A fairly tame romance overall, the characters were well developed and the story enjoyable。

Hot。 Same as the TV show but more detailed and definitely way more fun to get an insider into their heads and onto what's happening。 Hot。 Same as the TV show but more detailed and definitely way more fun to get an insider into their heads and onto what's happening。 。。。more

I really liked the begining but it just went downhill。 I will be the first to admit romance novels aren't really my thing but every now and again I will stumble across one I love。 This was not it。 The relationships in the novel were pretty dysfunctional。 I really liked the begining but it just went downhill。 I will be the first to admit romance novels aren't really my thing but every now and again I will stumble across one I love。 This was not it。 The relationships in the novel were pretty dysfunctional。 。。。more

I mean。。 If I'm honest I didn't finish the last 10% of this。 My audiobook returned to the library like over a month ago and I can't be fucked to try and continue on。 This was just like the show but worse don't waste your time。 I mean。。 If I'm honest I didn't finish the last 10% of this。 My audiobook returned to the library like over a month ago and I can't be fucked to try and continue on。 This was just like the show but worse don't waste your time。 。。。more

I loved the show, so wanted to read the novels。 Loved the romance up to the last 1/3 installment of the book。 I got fed up that the book was about one thing only, from them on。 It made me not want to read the next books in this series anymore。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Oy vey。 I have comments。The first part of the book where they're courting is incredible and I love it。 Once the "duel to the death" happens it just goes dooooowwwwnnnhill。The number of times Simon says "I own you" to Daphne was deeply uncomfortable。 Daphne having sex with an unconscious Simon (which is definitely rape) was deeply uncomfortable。 Simon and Daphne are manipulative and controlling。 And then I'm supposed to root for these fuckers to get back together? No。 Nope nope nope。 Oy vey。 I have comments。The first part of the book where they're courting is incredible and I love it。 Once the "duel to the death" happens it just goes dooooowwwwnnnhill。The number of times Simon says "I own you" to Daphne was deeply uncomfortable。 Daphne having sex with an unconscious Simon (which is definitely rape) was deeply uncomfortable。 Simon and Daphne are manipulative and controlling。 And then I'm supposed to root for these fuckers to get back together?

A quick little romp through The Regency era, where young women had to find a husband ( and that husband had to be approved by her father/older brother)。 And disaster hit if she moved outside of the boundaries of “acceptable“ behaviour。 But all ends happily。 Just the read I needed for distraction。

Maybe My New Favorite Love Story! While the tv series is amazing。。 books are always better。 This love story is one I can come back to over and over。 I adore Daphne and her siblings。 Don’t stop at The Duke and I… read them all!!

Katherine

It wasn’t one of my favorites, but I did like it。 I watched the show first so I think that had something to do with the way I read it。 Overall, it wasn’t a bad read。

This might have been a decent book if not for the explicit rape scene。 I was throughly uncomfortable reading it and then more uncomfortable when it wasn’t addressed。

I have to say, I liked the tv shoe much more than the movie。 If you have not watched the tv show, you will LOVE this book, but if you have, then the book just seems to be lacking detail and any information that isn't surrounding Daphne or Simon。 I have to say, I liked the tv shoe much more than the movie。 If you have not watched the tv show, you will LOVE this book, but if you have, then the book just seems to be lacking detail and any information that isn't surrounding Daphne or Simon。 。。。more

classic cliche of the false couple, it is a good book but the decisions of the protagonist are questionable

While I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others, I have strong mixed feelings about it。It was a fun and easy read, that I loved within the first couple of chapters。 I adored the dialogue, and the banter between Simon and Daphne was delightful。 I generally thought the characters were well done, and I'm sure the following books flesh them out even further。 There were a few things that bothered me, however。 The romance felt a little odd at times。 I loved their friendship, but it was like While I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others, I have strong mixed feelings about it。It was a fun and easy read, that I loved within the first couple of chapters。 I adored the dialogue, and the banter between Simon and Daphne was delightful。 I generally thought the characters were well done, and I'm sure the following books flesh them out even further。 There were a few things that bothered me, however。 The romance felt a little odd at times。 I loved their friendship, but it was like romance came in bursts, no slow burn, just sudden blinding passion。 It almost felt at times like the attraction was added in later as an afterthought, like there weren't enough romantic moments to hint at the relationship change。 What made me drop it from 4 stars to 3 stars, were some decisions that were made - with no remorse from the character - that just unsettled me and made me dislike one of the main characters。I largely enjoyed this book and the characters, and I DO recommend it to anyone looking for a fluffy historic romance with some very sweet, gushy parts and a handful of spicy bits, too。 。。。more

In this instance, the tv show is actually better than the book。 The sibling banter is enjoyable, but as a whole, it has some major issues and the characters are much more fleshed out in the show。 It’s also really hard to be sympathetic towards Daphne after one particular character choice。

Maya

i think i liked the show better, but i liked book daphne better 4/5

This book made me nostalgic for 2014 One Direction fanfiction I used to read。

I do want to start by mentioning that I have seen the television series, and I did before I read the book。 In fact I did not know that this was a book when I started the series, and for someone who is usually a book purist, I'm really glad there was differences between the book and the series。 As someone who doesn't read the book if I've seen the show/movie/whatever Netflix has decided to do with it this time, I do still recommend。 The novel is still engaging even when knowing additional details I do want to start by mentioning that I have seen the television series, and I did before I read the book。 In fact I did not know that this was a book when I started the series, and for someone who is usually a book purist, I'm really glad there was differences between the book and the series。 As someone who doesn't read the book if I've seen the show/movie/whatever Netflix has decided to do with it this time, I do still recommend。 The novel is still engaging even when knowing additional details。 A lot of the things that happen in the series to keep the plot moving do not happen in the book。 The characters aren't really as developed upon, I would've loved to see more of the active players in the show in this book, but my understanding is the series included parts and pieces of other storylines in later novels, so I suppose I will have to see。 。。。more

The first book in the series is SO good and gets you hooked。 After reading the first one I just had to read more。 I love this family and really feel as though they are distant friends。

I don’t know where this series has been all these years! So excited for the rest of the series。 They are easy, romantic, steamy reads。
